INTRODUCTION
Having become tired of working my way through My Computer then Properties, Device Manager, Modems then double click my modem then selecting Connection, Advanced just to change my init string, I decided to write SpeedInit.
WHAT DOES THE MTUSpeed UTILITY DO?
MTUSpeed searches your registry for modems and displays any USER ENTERED init strings associated with those modems. It does not display the inf file init strings as these are dynamic.
The user entries are stored in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\xxxx in Win95
(xxxx ranges from 0000 to 0030 and should find most peoples modems)
and System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} in WinNT
A text display at the top right of the main window indicates how many modems were detected in your system. A similar display below the text box shows the registry key entry (the xxxx bit) of the currently selected modem. The 2 horizontal dialogues (edit windows) show the modem currently selected by SpeedInit (the first one it finds if you have just started) in the upper (DropDown) Box and any user allocated init strings in the lower (text) box.
User allocated strings are strings which you have typed into the "Extra Settings" box on the "advanced" section of the modem properties dialogue. They are normally used to override or alter the default modem.inf settings.
MTUSpeed will NOT change the registry until the "Write the init string to the Registry" Button is pressed. That is the only time MTUSpeed writes to the registry. It does not write to the registry on exit. When starting, MTUSpeed accesses the registry in read-only mode.
The registry settings remain valid until you change them either manually or using MTUSpeed. They are not lost following a reboot (unlesss you have NetMedic installed which has a habit of deleting your init strings).
Clicking with the right mouse button anywhere in the main window will bring up a menu with functions for editing. This menu is different to the normal MTUSpeed menu.
If you change the string and decide you didn't want to, or you have become confused with the settings you have changed, select the "Re-Read Modem data from Registry" button. This will return the init string to what it was when you started the program BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVEN'T WRITTEN NEW SETTINGS TO THE REGISTRY. If you have written new settings and have made changes to the string since then, clicking on "Write the init string to the Registry" will return the init string to what it was WHEN YOU LAST PRESSED "Write the init string to the Registry".
